Crescenta Valley - On a hot and dry day that forced race times back toward evening and compelled the organizers to combine the girls’ and men’s varsity races, both teams began to show a similar pattern. Strong lead performers but a lack of depth necessary to make it to CIF Finals (girls) or to State (guys). Despite 2-5-8 finishes by senior Peaky Yuter, senior Robbie Moreton and sophomore Drew Jack, the men failed to gain ground on La Canada. Still, 2011’s team is about a minute faster than 2010’s team.
For the girls, Alissa Barraza continued to knock off time seamingly with every race. However, the rest of the team is struggling to make any progress against the middle of the South Pasadena and La Canada teams despite energetic performances. And don’t look now but Monrovia is closing the gap.
Despite the team scoring issues, the day was filled with interesting battles as girls out-sprinted guys to the finish line and individual Titans had memorable performances. Robbie Moreton, in particular, had a good day placing 5th and not allowing any underclassmen past him. And how about Daniel Covarrubias with his 19:31? Marina’s 1 minute improvement over last year. Freshman Sara Linton continued to impress and is now the girls’ undisputed #2 runner. Finally, Crescenta Valley’s downhill finish set the stage for thrilling final sprints including Yuwei Tu’s battle with La Canada’s Robin Miketta.
