Senior Alissa Barraza led a 2-3-6 pack of Titans to a slim and surprising victory at the first Rio Hondo League meet on Wednesday at Santa Fe Dam. Recovering from a recent injury, Alissa showed her 2012 form for the first time this year while sophomore Olivia Harrigian kept pace until the last 100 yards. La Canada’s Colleen Mispagel, defying this writer’s gross miscalculation of her ability, fought off SoPas’ leading athlete Helena Van Loan and our own Sarah Linton. Sarah has a pattern of pacing herself through a season and her 70 second improvement in 3 weeks fits her MO. Without that improvement, La Canada would be celebrating a first-place tie right now. With the cooler weather (vs. three weeks ago) and additional training, the second half of the team showed marked improvement as #4 Fiona Harrigian chopped more than a minute off her time as did frosh Alejandra Larriva-Latt. Soph Angela Wang, although not a scorer, made the biggest improvement with a nearly two minute improvement in 3 weeks. Angela is now within 20 seconds of displacing La Canada’s #5 scorer, Colleen’s sister Caitlin. The Titan’s usual #4 experienced a tough day. We still have a month to figure out the 4-5 part of the team. But, 1-2-3 is solid. Not a bad base to build on.
