Girls Come Very Close; End Historic Season

2013-11-23 - Olivia racing down Reservoir 3

Someone always has to be the 8th team, the team that just misses the cut for State.  On Saturday, it was us.  It was Oaks Christian and San Marino battling for that last seat on the Fresno bus.  Oaks Christian got the ticket on the strength of 7th and 14th place finishes which gave them a mere 6 point victory.  Sophomore Olivia Harrigian, who historically had struggled at SAC, knocked it out of the park with a 19:16 run at the Finals.  Think that she doesn’t like SAC now?  Senior Alissa Barraza closed her high school cross country career with a 29th place finish, not what she expected.  Junior Sarah Linton, a model of consistency, ripped off her second-best time on the SAC course to finish 38th.

We said in the preview of the Finals that if Veronica had a good race, the girls would make it.  We were wrong.  Veronica did her part.  Ronnie really busted one on Saturday, finishing in 20:17.  She ran a 21:45 on this same course in October.  Kudos to the senior for that career closer.  Sophomore Carlin Koch is a natural fit to the treacherous terrain of SAC and she demonstrated that once again as she duplicated her Prelims performance with a 21:05.

While they may be a little disappointed not to be running in the State meet, these girls really distinguished themselves this year.  League Champions.  And this is a deep team with 5 of 7 CIF Finals athletes returning in 2014.  Congratulations on a memorable season.

Men at CIF Finals

2013-11-23 - Kenny, Yuvan, Girish and Michael start up Switchbacks

Not What They Hoped For

The most powerful men’s cross country team to come through San Marino High School in 20 years came up short on Saturday.  Despite personal record performances by seniors Drew Jack and Kenny Lee, the team simply didn’t run well on Saturday.  It seemed that it started at the beginning as the SM pack was still at the rear of the race at the end of the first Valley Loop.  When you saw senior Yuvan Wickramasinghe back there a half mile into the race, you knew it was going to be a difficult day.  The race fell apart on the Switchbacks when junior George Mundo dropped out due to a cramped calf muscle.  In the end, it was a 13th place finish in a race that saw some very fast performances by other teams.  The two teams that appeared to be the ones in the hunt for the championship ended up 4th and 8th.  Just 36 points separated #1 from #8.  Our boys were back in a pack of 4 teams that included Don Bosco and Crespi.

Light rain had battered the course for days and there were strong indications that the traditional mountain course would not be safe for the race.  However, the organizers spent Friday afternoon laying down dry dirt in the softest, most dangerous sections of the course - the downhill stretches of Reservoir and the Gauntlet.  At 6am on Saturday morning, with the first light of dawn breaking, they pronounced the course suitable for racing.  And suitable it was.  None of the 32 teams that ran Prelims the week before on this same course broke 82 minutes.  On Saturday, nine of the 16 teams accomplished that feat.

Still, there were many positives to be gleaned from the day.  Drew set the second-fastest time for an SM athlete at Mt. SAC in the last several years.  His 16:20 will be the performance to match in the coming years.  Kenny’s low-slung attack of PoopOut will be etched in video stone for generations to come.

Prelims shown because Finals was on the rain course.

Funny but very effective as he destroyed his previous PR at SAC (17:13) by nearly half a minute.  Another half-minute improvement was made by sophomore Michael Mundo.  Junior Girish Balaji also set his PR at SAC on Saturday, faster by 9 seconds.  Even with all the issues on Saturday, the progress of the team during the tenure of these seniors has been impressive.  When they were freshmen, we barely got three athletes under 17 minutes.  Now, we expect all seven to break under.  How times have changed.
