The 47th Staub-Barnes Invitational at La Crescenta Park was run in hot, dry, dusty conditions over a 3 mile course comprised mainly of (dead) grass and dirt with some hills. The meet organizers indicate that times are typically comparable to those at Mt. SAC. Titan runners were placed in race level 2 for their events, along with Rio Hondo League rival La Canada.
The Varsity Men brought home the Staub-Barnes Champion T-Shirts by winning their race with 67 points against La Canada (76 points) and nine other teams. The team times were separated by only 13 seconds, San Marino 1:29:50 to La Canada’s 1:30:03, but the Titan 2-3-4 runners’ placings gave San Marino a combined 9 point edge. John Judge again led the team with a 5th place finish in 17:20. Girish Balaji remained steady in the second scoring spot with a 10th place finish (17:46). Sophomore Eric Lew keeps improving and was right on Girish’s heels in 11th place (17:48). Toma’s Liu came in 18th (18:19) and Charlie Perry, battling two La Canada runners to the finish, came in 23rd (18:36). Justin Castleman (19:12, 35th) and Cavanaugh Jue (19:31, 42nd) rounded out the seven Varsity runners. Trivia Fact: La Crescenta Park was Coach DiConti’s home course when he competed in high school.
Sarah Linton’s 21:10 (3rd) led the Lady Titans to a 3rd place finish (80 points) in their Varsity race behind La Canada (33 points) and Knight (59 points). Sarah was in familiar company with La Canada’s Katie Scoville and Coleen Mispagel, who came in 1-2, respectively. Carlin Koch’s 21:45 was good for 7th place and Angela Wang’s 22:09 brought her through at 17th. Kelly McCrary (22:50) and Sharmayne Siu (22:53) again ran together through much of the race and came through in 29th and 30th place. Cara Roberts moved up to Varsity and ran 23:13 for 36th place.
With the heat expected to be even more of a factor in the later Frosh and Soph races, all non-Varsity Titan guys were entered into the earlier JV Boys race and came in 4th in the team competition with 81 points. Alexander Lai (20:39, 13th) and David Thi (20:43, 14th) led the Titans. Freshman Grant Holt was next with 20:47 (16th), and Timothy Wong (21:36, 28th) and Ethan Deshaies (21:37, 29th) rounded out the five scoring runners. The remaining runners were Matt Kim (21:40, 32nd), Joshua Wong (21:47, 34th), Kyle McCall (21:54, 37th), Jonathan (Yen) Chen (21:58, 38th), Tom Moffat (22:21, 42nd) and Douglas Lou (22:53, 47th).
