2011-11-03 - Peaky winning League Finals

Peaky is League Champ

Lacy Park - Coach Mundo has been saying it for months.  Senior Peaky Yuter will be the League Champion.  Some of us thought Coach was being a bit unrealistic.  But, on a day when Peaky slashed nearly a minute off his previous best at Lacy Park, Mundo proved that he knew exactly what he was talking about. Always known for his big finishes, Peaky stayed in contact with South Pasadena’s Paul Messana and La Canada’s Brendan Greene throughout the race and was just close enough in the last 100 yards.  That is when he kicked it into turbo and burst past Greene and held off Messana to bring home the trophy for the first time since Warren Wolf (‘94) did it in 1993 during the golden era.

Peaky was not the only big story for the guys.  Robbie and Drew ran together and both broke 17 minutes.  Yuvan, who usually paces behind Kenny, ran his own race as Kenny was battling an ankle injury.  One of the most exciting performances for the team was freshman John Judge who seems ready to run with Drew next year.  Those performances all added up to a team effort that finally beat La Canada for the first time in many years.

Coach Mundo says that this team can make State. Time will tell how clear his crystal ball is.

Lacy Park - In a gut-check effort by the varsity girls at the League Finals, the team sliced more than 4 minutes off their best team time at Lacy Park.  Remember their performance at the first league meet at Lacy Park in September?  Freshman Sarah Linton was second-fastest at 21:42. At League Finals, we had 4 girls at least a minute better.  Key among them was Sophomore Veronica Mejia who paced fellow Sophomore Alissa Barraza and nearly joined her in breaking the 20-minute barrier.  The other two were Freshman Sarah Linton and Senior Captain Caitlin Hittner, who each surprised by running a minute faster than before.

Despite the big performance improvement, the team was unable to place any finishers in the top 10 against the faster Division 3 competition.  The team was evenly spread throughout the middle part of the pack, taking every other place starting with Alissa’s 11th place finish. A gap is now apparent between the 4th and 5th girls on the team.  We will need one of those ladies - Lindsay Snaer, Marissa Shen or Marina Flores - to dig down and close that gap in order for the team to advance beyond the Prelims round of CIF.  There isn’t much time.  Just 1 week.  How sweet it would be to have both teams in the Finals.
