Lacy Park - Coach Mundo has been saying it for months. Senior Peaky Yuter will be the League Champion. Some of us thought Coach was being a bit unrealistic. But, on a day when Peaky slashed nearly a minute off his previous best at Lacy Park, Mundo proved that he knew exactly what he was talking about. Always known for his big finishes, Peaky stayed in contact with South Pasadena’s Paul Messana and La Canada’s Brendan Greene throughout the race and was just close enough in the last 100 yards. That is when he kicked it into turbo and burst past Greene and held off Messana to bring home the trophy for the first time since Warren Wolf (‘94) did it in 1993 during the golden era.
Peaky was not the only big story for the guys. Robbie and Drew ran together and both broke 17 minutes. Yuvan, who usually paces behind Kenny, ran his own race as Kenny was battling an ankle injury. One of the most exciting performances for the team was freshman John Judge who seems ready to run with Drew next year. Those performances all added up to a team effort that finally beat La Canada for the first time in many years.
Coach Mundo says that this team can make State. Time will tell how clear his crystal ball is.
