Numerous Personal Bests Were Not Enough to Get Teams to Finals This Year
The hopes of both Titan Varsity teams reaching CIF Southern Section Finals for a fourth year in a row were not realized this year. With a team time of 102:46, the Girls missed a trip to Finals by an achingly small 2 seconds across 5 scoring runners. By placing 5th in the race with a 19:07 PR, Olivia Harrigian qualified for Finals as an individual. Angela Wang dropped 30 seconds off her PR at 20:49 and Senior Kelly McCrary continued her strong final season by dropping 48 seconds off her PR to clock 21:30 in the 5th scoring spot for the Lady Titans. Cara Roberts also had a PR of 22:34. The Ladies’ only consolation might be that two of PrepCalTrack’s top 10 rated State D-4 teams, Atascadero (former D3) and Laguna Beach, were in their heat and made it tough to qualify.
The Rio Hondo League champion Titan Men completed a strong season by placing 7th in their Prelims heat with a team time of 86:41. An impressive six runners had personal bests on the tough SAC course, but it was not enough to get them to Finals. The PR charge was led by Senior John Judge (16:44, 15 sec drop), followed by Charlie Perry who had a breakout race taking 1:11 off his previous best to clock 17:17. Senior Toma’s Liu was close behind at 17:19 (26 sec drop) and Eric Lew also had a personal best of 17:40 (19 sec drop). Although out of scoring, juniors Cav Jue (18:27) and Alexander Lai (19:11) each took over a minute off their previous best SAC marks. CIF Division realignment in 2014 definitely impacted the Prelims for the Titan men -- with three former D3 schools finishing ahead of the Titans in their heat: Cathedral (1), Orange Lutheran (2) and Azusa (5).
