CIF Finals - Girls Varsity
The Lady Titans closed out their season at CIF-SS Finals with a three-plus minute improvement in team time from the time posted at Prelims the week before. Even with this improvement, the team placed 22nd against the best D-4 squads. The five scoring runners were frosh and sophs, so the CIF experience will be valuable for future seasons. Soph Olivia Ruiz again led the Titans with an impressive 18:26 course PR time and 27th place finish. Frosh Purvaja Balaji came through next at 19:18 in 69th place, also with a course PR. Meg Hannan (21:08 PR, 145th), Juliana Judge (21:15, 149), and Katie Wong (22:30 PR, 166th) were the remaining scorers. Seniors Kat Chen (22:53, 168th) and Evelyn Tran (23:46, 170th) raced their final high school cross country race. Olivia, Puja and Katie each took 30 or more seconds off their Prelims times. Meg had an over 2 minute improvement!
CIF Prelims - Girls and Boys Varsity
It was unseasonably hot and dry for Veterans Day, making the Riverside City XC Course more challenging and dusty for CIF Prelims. The Lady Titans qualified for CIF-SS Finals with an 11th place team performance in Heat 1 of D-4 Prelims (the Titans benefited from CIF’s decision to expand the number of teams in Finals to 24 from the traditional 16 due to the wider start line at Riverside versus Mt. SAC.) Olivia Ruiz paced the team with a nice 6th place finish and 19:00 personal best time. Frosh Purvaja Balaji was next at 19:48 in 25th place. The remaining scorers were Juliana Judge (20:50, 61st), Kat Chen (23:09, 123rd), and Meg Hannan (23:09, 124th).
The Varsity guys placed 14th in their heat, with a team time of 1:29:37, and so did not make the top 12 needed to qualify for Finals. Disappointingly, none of the returning runners were able to match their 2015 CIF Prelims times on the Riverside course. Eric Lew was the first Titan to finish, with a time of 17:12 in 37th place. Xavier Beck was next in 59th place with a time of 17:27. On the bright side, the remaining five varsity runners are all Sophs and Juniors who will benefit from the CIF experience come 2017. Sean Chen ran 18:00 for 88th place, Alex Powers was next (18:28, 103rd), with Tim Wong right behind (18:29, 104th). Patricio Osegueda finished in 18:38 at 109th place, and Joseph Weber was in 114th place with an 18:57. Tom Moffat was under the weather and could not compete.
