Coach Mundo Sets Ambitious Goals
 for the Season

A message from the Coach to the families and friends of the team

With summer quickly winding down, and the temperature heating up, the boys and girls teams prepare to begin what may turn out to be the finest SMXC season in over a decade.  Both teams begin the season highly ranked in Southern Section Division 4, and determined to extend their post season.

The girls’ team returns 5 runners from last year’s record breaking effort.    Seniors Alissa Barraza and Veronica Mejia lead a very talented group that includes Junior Sarah Linton and Sophomore Olivia Harrigian.  Juniors Kelly McCrary and Sharmayne Siu face strong competition from sophomores Fiona Harrigian, Angela Wang, Cara Roberts, Carlin Koch and Jade Larriva-Latt for the remaining spots.    Freshman Alejandra Larriva-Latt arrives highly heralded and familiar to the program.

This group is poised to challenge La Canada for the Rio Hondo League Championship and advance to the California State Meet in November.   They are currently ranked 8th in the state by Cross Country Express.

On the boys’ side, seniors Andrew Jack, Yuvan Wickramasinghe and Kenny Lee return for their final year, and with a chance to run in four (4) consecutive CIF Finals meets, a feat not accomplished by any SMXC athlete in more than a decade.  They are joined by junior sensations George Mundo, John Judge, Tomas Liu and Girish Balaji.  Last year, this group dominated the sophomore team race at the prestigious Mt. Sac Invitational by placing 4 in the top ten.  Finally, Sophomore Michael Mundo is preparing to challenge for the fifth position after earning a varsity letter as a freshman.

This team’s goal is to challenge reigning league champion South Pasadena, and possibly place 5 runners in the top twelve at league finals.  If the 5th man steps up, a trip to Fresno in November is assured.

The San Marino Cross Country program is intended to accommodate runners of all levels.  The main focus is the development of the complete athlete with the goal of assembling a competitive team to represent the community of San Marino.  Essential to achieving this goal is the adherence to the code of standards established by the National Interscholastic Federation.  Especially, the concept that competitive athletics augments the lessons learned in the classroom.

Expectations - Athletes choosing to participate on the San Marino Cross Country team must commit to challenge themselves.  They should approach the season with the understanding that they represent themselves, their family, their school, and the community of San Marino.  As such, hard work, commitment and discipline are the pillars of success and will be reinforced throughout the season.

Equipment - All runners should have a pair of quality running shoes and a wristwatch that contains a stopwatch component.  It is also an advantage to have a pair of racing flats.  San Marino High School provides team jerseys; however, the athlete purchases team shorts and warm-ups.

Lettering - Athletes who practice and race with the varsity group (in league meets) earn varsity letters.  It is required that an athlete participates in 100% of eligible races and in at least 95% of practices.  Athletes who practice and race with the development group earn either Frosh-Soph or Junior Varsity letters.  It is required that an athlete participate in 100% of eligible races and at least 90% of practices.

Competition - All athletes are eligible to compete in all League Meets, the Phil Ryan Invitational, and the Mt. SAC Invitational.  San Marino must enter the top seven athletes in the varsity races for each of the 3 league meets.  Selection to participate in an invitational meet is based upon level of conditioning and level of commitment demonstrated by an athlete.

Transportation - Depending upon the location of the meet, transportation will either be provided by bus or by parent volunteers.  No transportation will be provided for meets at Lacy Park (Phil Ryan Invitational, League Meet #1, and League Finals).

Grades - Athletes receive grades for their participation.  This grade is based upon attendance and completion of homework.  Roll is taken daily and homework is checked weekly.  To receive an “A”, the athlete must achieve a minimum of 95% attendance.  A “B”  requires at least 90% attendance and a “C” requires 85% attendance.

Diet - Improper diet and lack of rest are the most common causes of fatigue and injuries for young runners.  As such, it is important that runners eat well, rest, and maintain hydration throughout the day, especially during hot weather.
