Men Win Their Race; Appear to be 9th in Division 4

2013-10-25 - Drew & George coming down Reservoir

Drew’s Big Performance - Shadowing team leader George Mundo the entire race, Drew gets in front of George coming down Reservoir with less then half a mile to go.  Drew handles Mt. SAC well.  Click the picture to watch the race video.  (The junior edged the senior at the finish.)

Despite a major transportation snafu, which prevented the team from getting in a real warm-up, the team made the best of it by easily winning one of three varsity races.  They also would have won the second race.  But the Sweepstakes race was a different animal.  A Central Division school won that contest in 80 minutes.

The Titan men were a game bunch on Friday.  The top 3 - George, Drew and Yuvan - went 7-8-9 and were all under 16:45 on the difficult Mt. SAC course.  John, Girish and Kenny formed the second wave of Titans, all within 27 seconds of each other.  There is potential there.  If the guys can do that well on a day when nothing seemed to go right, then watch them in CIF Finals when teams get tight.  They may be 9th now but I have a feeling that they are going to do what is necessary to make the big show.

There is a pattern here.  Junior Sarah Linton comes on strong when championship running begins.  And Mt. SAC is her second home.  Sarah and senior Alissa Barraza broke 20 minutes on the legendary Mt. SAC mountain course.  We’re betting that Alissa can break 19 minutes in November.

The other half of what is normally the varsity girls’ squad ran the sophomore race.  The transportation difficulties caused them to arrive at Mt. SAC just minutes before their race.  That accounts for a significant portion of the reason that no other SM girl broke 21 minutes.

We should expect the girls ranking to drop; probably to 13.  Sixteen teams make the cut so they are still in pretty good shape but the margin is getting thin.  As with the men, this should be seen as an opportunity for them to overcome the difficulties that are thrown into their path.
