As promised, the duo meet with Eagle Rock on Thursday delivered great entertainment as the two teams battled to the last race - the 4x400 relays - to determine the varsity winners. The Titan men led by 1 and the girls were tied. Unfortunately, the Eagles have two fast 4x4 teams and they took both of the varsity 4x4s. The scorers in the other girls’ races included Alissa Barraza, who contributed 10 points to the girls’ total by winning the 1600 and the 3200 (her first time running the 3200). Elizabeth O’Neill and Ashley Chuck went 1-2 in the long jump and Monica DeJesu picked up 5 points with a win in the 100. Anya Kwan took the gold in the pole vault, clearing 9’ 8”. The potential for a win was there as no one other than Eagle Rock’s Belinda Dornidon entered the high jump. Her 4’ performance gave the Eagles the five points they needed while the 4 points for second and third went unclaimed.
Junior (An)Drew Jack came close to matching Alissa’s achievement by winning the 3200 and coming close to taking the 1600 (settling for second). The men’s race of the day had to be the 800, where Eagle Rock runners held commanding leads at the halfway mark, only to see sophomore John Judge run them down and take the win. As expected, Chip Crowley easliy won the 400. Chip also made the final 4x4 relay competitive by almost erasing a big Eagles lead, but the deficit was just too big. The men joined the girls by scoring a victory in the 100 with Brandon Chen winning in 11.43. In a bit of a surprise, Jonathan Yau beat a good Eagle shot put team and Matthew Ferraco won the high jump while Wyatt Wu added 5 points with a pole vault win.
Unlike the close varsity contests, the frosh-soph scores were blow-outs. San Marino’s girls won 63-36 but the boys got hammered 90-37. On the track, the girls took every event except the 100 hurdles and the 4x400 relay. There were three field events, of which the Titans won two (they conceded the shot). The story was just exactly the opposite on the boys’ side. Michael Mundo (1600 meters) and Nick Pivzado (100 meters) stood in the way of an Eagle sweep of the track events. Matt Derrick (pole vault) prevented the Eagle sweep of the field events.
The Eagles had a large, young team with some strong talent that made for some great contests. We look forward to seeing how they do in CIF. In the meantime, you can look at the top 3 finishers in each event (presented below).
