But, the litmus test of depth is the 4x400 relay. It is also the most exciting event of a track meet. On Wednesday, Alissa, Jennifer, Monica and Carlin put together a 4:21 and the coach thinks that we haven’t seen anything yet. That performance is already just a second in back of last year’s third place finish in the Finals.
In what figured to be the toughest field in any event yesterday, Alissa had some serious competition from Sonja Cwik and Anna Friedrich in the 1600. It was a tight pack of 3 through the first 3 and a half laps but the Spartan girls were able to break away in the final 200 meters. The strong competition enable Alissa to finish within a second of her personal best in the 1600. Alissa had an even better run in the 800 as she set a tough pace and Anna Friedrich was just not able to close the gap. “I probably went out a little too fast and felt it on the second half”, Alissa commented. “I am working on improving my pace.”
In what continues to be the most exciting intra-team competition, Monica managed to cross the line in front of Jennifer in the 200 by a margin of just 0.31 second. More to come from those two. Elizabeth O’Neil contributed 8 team points with a win in the 300 hurdles and a place in the 100 hurdles. Too bad there won’t be any video of that 100 hurdles race because the margin was razor-thin and it would be fun to watch.
