Rosemead Invitational
March 10 & 11, Rosemead High School

The Titans achieved a good number of top five finishes in their first official team meet of the season, which was especially impressive given that a number of athletes were just joining the team from recently concluded winter sports competitions.  Friday night is the “Distance Carnival”, which features a number of relay events.  San Marino’s Varsity Girls 4x1600M relay team took 2nd place and dropped over a minute from last year’s time.  The varsity guys grabbed 5th place in the same event.  The frosh-soph boys placed 4th in the 4x800M relay.  The frosh-soph girls took first place in the sprint medley relay in a time of 4:32, and the varsity guys grabbed a bronze medal in the same event.

The next morning, the frosh-soph girls got things rolling with a win in the first event of the day, the 4x100M relay, in a time of 53.24 (not far off the best Titan Varsity girls 4x100M of the entire 2016 season, 52.88).  Chuma Azinge was all over the stadium racking up top three performances in the 110M Hurdles (3rd, 15.58), 100M Dash (2nd, 11.62), High Jump (2nd, 6’ 2”), and Triple Jump (1st, 42’ 6.5”) -- amazingly for this early in the season, his performances in the 100M dash, high jump and 110M hurdles were all better than his very impressive best performances in 2016 (and he went to CIF Prelims in the 110M hurdles!).  Keila Barra was also a multi-event standout -- placing 3rd in the F/S girls 400M with a time of 1:01.88 (a personal best), and 2nd in the F/S girls high jump.  Olivia Ruiz ran 2:29 to take 2nd in the F/S girls 800M (her time was just off her 2016 best).  Ben Tang placed 5th in the F/S boys 400M.  Christian Baffo won the F/S boys pole vault with a height of 9’ 6”, and Anson Kwan vaulted to 11’ 6” for a 5th place in the varsity boys (his performance matched his 2016 best).

A great start of the season for a number of athletes, and they have almost three weeks to practice before taking on the traditionally strong Monrovia squad in the first Rio Hondo meet of the season.
