Race of the Day

Classic clash - Long sprinter, Chris Crowley (left), and fast-twitch endurance athlete, John Judge (right), battle down the stretch in a classic battle made for the 800 meters.  The 800 meters is where the worlds of speed and endurance collide.  Chris usually runs (and wins) the 400 and this was his first taste of the 800.

Whether it has been Jennifer Campbell and Monica DeJesu battling in the 200 meters or Anya Kwan setting new school records in the pole vault, the girls have been the feature act in almost every meet this season.  Not today.  Facing a meet day in which he was scheduled to rest, Chris Crowley asked his coach to allow him to enter a race.  The race he chose was the 800.  Twice his usual distance.  A distance he had not previously raced with his team.  Not an easy task with John Judge in the race.  John has the fastest 800 time this season - a 2:07.55.  But Chip is not a novice at racing and he planned his attack well.  Allowing John to set the pace, he stayed within striking distance until the final 200.  At that point, it appeared that John was building a big enough lead to hold off any attack.  But as they came out of the final turn, Chip found another gear and closed the gap.  If you don’t know the end to this story, you’ll have to watch the video to find out who won by a hundredth of a second.

This Thursday’s Meet Moved to San Marino

This Thursday’s duo meet with Blair has been moved to San Marino High School’s track as a result of an agreement between the coaches of both teams.  Blair will continue to be the host.  The meet was originally scheduled to be held at a third-party site (Muir High School) but it became apparent that the logistics of the meet would be better served by having the meet at SMHS.  Blair has a small team, thought to number less than 15 athletes.  Given the fact that the Titans will be hosting a significant invitational just two days later, we don’t expect a push for any outstanding performances in the Blair meet.  We will have some video of the Blair races, particularly those races where Blair will compete.
