A competitive team is coming to town today in the form of Eagle Rock High School. Eagle Rock opened their season by competing in the Monrovia Wildcat Relays on February 23. Their top men’s performance there was a school 6th-best time in the 4x400 relay of 3:30. OK, we’ll give ‘em that one. Their lead jumper, Stewart McKenzie,did the long jump in 20’ 7”and the triple in 46’, breaking the school record by 2 feet. They also had their girls’ record for the triple broken by Caroline Roncalli, who leaped 34’ 10”. The highlight of our meet with Eagle Rock may be the varsity girls’ 4x400 relay. They actually fielded two teams at Monrovia in that event, with their fastest team clocking a 4:24, to take third place. Our girls did a 4:29 last week but without significant competition. An even tighter relay will be the 4x100 where their girls clocked a 53.96 last week, almost identical to ours.
Their top female milers run just over 6 minutes but they have a good miler on the guys’ side in Elvis Elden who turned in a 4:49 at the Mike Ramos Invitational last Saturday. Let’s see what Drew can do with him. It figures to be a busy day for Drew as he will challenge Leo Hernandez in the 3200 (10:55 last Saturday). Chip Crowley should be fast enough to take the 400 but the 800 is a challenge as we give away 3 seconds to their Kenny Wong. Maybe our Kenny can find 3 more seconds in those XC legs.
