It doesn’t matter how you get there, it only matters that you make it. In a division that ran three heats with 38 girls, senior Alissa Barraza picked off the ninth and final qualifying spot for next Saturday’s Finals. Only nine of those 38 girls broke 2:20 in the 800 meters and Alissa was one of them. Camille Hines, a frosh from Palos Verdes set the pace in Alissa’s heat (#3). Interestingly, Hines’ 2:15.93 was only the third fastest time among the 3 heats. Heat 2 sent 5 of the nine qualifiers to the Finals. In fact, had Alissa been in heat 1, she might have won it as the winner was only three-hundredths of a second faster than Alissa. The Titans’ best athlete will close out her high school career next Saturday at Cerritos College.
There were no surprises among the other Titan entries, as the heat compromised a lot of performances for all the schools. Juniors Toma’s Liu and John Judge closed notable years, running off their best marks set at last week’s League Finals. The same was true of senior Veronica Mejia, who closed her career with a CIF appearance.
Soph Olivia Harrigian placed 12th in the 3200, about 10 seconds out of the final qualifying position. Other than Northwood’s Bethan Knight, the 3200 is packed with frosh and soph runners so it won’t get much easier for Olivia nedxt year.
The day’s heart-breaker was junior Angeline Wong in the Pole Vault. Angeline and one other competitor cleared the same height (10 feet) as the ninth (and final) qualifier but required more attempts to accomplish it. No Finals for Angeline this year. Soph Sam Mejia cleared 9’ 6”,to match her League Finals performance, which was good for 12th place.
