It was hot and dry, even under the oaks, at Crescenta Valley Park (as Coach Leung and Dr. Chen would attest since they were there setting up the course all day!) The heat and sneaky elevation gain seemed to affect everyone, but especially the girls squad.
The Varsity Boys, now at full strength with Xavier Beck competing, took 2nd place in the team competition. Xavier (17:47), Charlie Perry (17:47 PR) and Eric Lew (17:48) provided text-book pack running throughout and ended up 5-7th place. Freshman Patricio Osegueda (18:50) and Senior Alex Lai (18:53 PR) rounded out the top 5 scoring runners, and Cav Jue (19:04) and Grant Holt (19:05) each had PRs. South Pas looks tough, with 7 runners in the top 15. La Canada is close behind the Titans, so San Marino’s 4-7 runners (which had a spread of only 15 seconds) will need to be on their game in future league meets.
The Varsity Girls came out flat and took 3rd place to defending RHL champ La Canada and an improved South Pasadena. Olivia Harrigian had a solid performance in her first race of the season, taking 2nd in 19:54. , and Angela Wang bounced back from a disappointing Mt. Carmel to take 10th in 21:03 (PR). Fiona Harrigian (21:36, 13th), newcomer Evelyn Tran (21:58, 16th) and Freshman Olivia Ruiz (22:07, 19th) rounded out the top 5 scorers. The Lady Titans will need to close the 2-plus minute gap in their scorers in order to challenge.
In the JV Girls, San Marino had three top 10 finishers, led by Juliana Judge (23:01) in 7th, followed by Cara Roberts (23:39, 9th) and Meg Hannan (23:45, 10th). In the JV Boys, Kyle McCall took 9th with a 20:23 PR. San Marino had 12 runners in the Boys Frosh-Soph race, with sophomores Tom Moffat (19:42 ,9th) and Jonathan Chen (19:46, 10th) each breaking into the top 10 with PRs. Freshmen Bill Li (19:53, 13th) and Josh Rose (20:15, 16th) were not far behind.
